The drive from Ecum Secum to Liscombe Lodge on Highway 7 is lovely.

Ecum Secum, which is derived from the Mi’kmaq language means “a red house,” a testament to the initial contacts with the first Europeans settlers in the 1780s. At Marie Joseph, there is a Provincial Picnic Park with a wonderful view. Picnic tables are scattered under softwoods overlooking a rocky shoreline, with a view of coastal waters and islands.

Liscombe Lodge is a must see. The Lodge and associated cabins are nestled along the river from waterfalls to where the sea meets the river. The dining is wonderful with an overlook of the river estuary, complete with birds flitting about at the window as you enjoy your meal. The Lodge’s trail system is designed to accommodate hikers of all experience levels and is open to free access by the public. If you are looking for a challenge, you can try the more difficult trails like the Liscomb River and Mayflower Trails. The Liscomb River Trail (9.6km) is a birders delight and includes scenery of forested streams with water cascading through glacial boulders towards the sea. It also has a fish ladder for salmon and a suspension bridge over the river which offers a wonderful vantage point for photos. The Mayflower Trail (2.9 km) is a rugged coastal hiking trail that winds along the mouth of the Liscomb River. Scenic lookouts exist on the trail and there are many opportunities to meet plants and wildlife. Additionally, Liscombe Lodge itself is a great place for short hikes, birding, and nature experiences, including on their pontoon boat tour of the Liscomb River estuary.

You can also take in the culture of a community market and enjoy the creations of local artisans and artists invited to express the place as they see it.

Goldenville

The Goldenville Gold District was once known as Nova Scotia’s Klondike. Located in the former Goldenville Presbyterian Church; the Goldenville Gold Mining Interpretive Centre has information on gold mining in Nova Scotia and on the small community that became Nova Scotia’s major gold-producing area (1861–1942). During your visit you will find artifacts, photos, genealogical records, and stories – as told by the miners of days past.

Genealogy

For the amateur genealogist, interested in the days of forestry and log driving, the St. Mary’s River West Branch along Highway 348 may be of interest. After visiting at the St. Mary’s Genealogy Research Centre at Sherbrooke Village to become oriented, one can visit the many pioneer cemeteries along the route to gain insights on family history and connections. While relatively few people live in the area now, it once was a series of prosperous communities with many family homes, woods camps, sawmills, and general stores. The historical landmarks are still to be found in this now wild landscape.

Sherbrooke Village Museum

A must-see cultural experience for visitors to the Sherbrooke area is the Sherbrooke Village Museum. At the museum you can explore Nova Scotia’s 19th century heritage, exploring the village as it was more than a century ago, complete with costumed villagers and period crafters like blacksmiths and weavers. Set in the 1860’s, timber harvest, ship building, and gold mining ruled life along the St Mary’s River, turning Sherbrooke into a thriving community. As part of your visit, you can explore the many heritage buildings, interact with costumed interpreters, participate in Victorian-period activities, and shop for village-crafted gifts. Enjoy your trip back in time and drop into Village Treasures & Gift Shop on site to bring home a hand-crafted item.

Salmon Museum

The Salmon Museum, located just outside of Sherbrooke, has fascinating exhibits related to salmon angling on the St. Mary’s River. There is an excellent collection of photos, fishing tackle and memorabilia of famous anglers such as Lee Wulff and the Legendary Babe Ruth. You can learn about the life cycle of Atlantic salmon and see exhibits on local wildlife including the wood turtle, birds, butterflies, and bats. Here, you can learn about the river system, it’s history, its challenges and the progress made by volunteers on river restoration. The Museum is a testament to what local conservation stewards can accomplish.

Port Bickerton

The Lighthouse Interpretive Centre is a cultural must-see. The lighthouse is open on a seasonal basis to offer information to visitors about the history of the Port Bickerton Lighthouse and Nova Scotia’s rich maritime lighthouse tradition. Moreover, since 2014, the lightkeeper’s residence on site has been operated as both an artist retreat, and as a weekly vacation rental cottage. On occasion, the artist-in-residence also presents their work for all to see.

Country Harbour Ferry
